outer space.

outer space.....

well, 9 month away from any artistic creation i started to ask myself....can i still do something, or is it all gone.

so recently after watching prometheus, and sawing some alien designs floating around the net i tought...come on lets try a speed sculpt.

well..... i still can sculpt a litte bit, its like riding the bike, ones learned you can get back on the seat very fast.
obvious i didnt make any progress in regards to skill, and lost some of my details anatomie knowledge, but i am happy to see that i can do something like that in about 30 minutes, and what motivates more than a female giger alien with boobs? :)  not a masterpiece,  but the basics are still there.

as a remainder for myself....sculpt here and there in your sparetime...its still fun!

My times as an active artist were counted as we started our latest project as my position changed and i am mainly working as an outsourcing manager&creature art director now and in the future. But to my own happiness i was able to still manage to get my hands on some creatures as an artist for our latest game.

As the marketing give out pictures and the game will be realeased i will be able to put out more detials and sculpts i done for the game.... i found this picture flying around on the internet so there is no prob to just post it here. After NDA vanished i will put more stuff up here...but that may still take some time.

This little critter is not my work at all, it is the gnom i did for risen1...this modified version was done by my friend dennis day....the gnome basebody and head is still is the same as back in r1 but he done the pirate hat,the backpack/belts and some other little changes. As i put my love into this guy back in Risen1 i am happy to see that he done an great job and make him an even cooler character! The credit for the modified design goes mainly to jann kernke who is our internal concept artist here at piranha bytes, and we work closely together to get all the creature designs to a level we both and the team like.

dynamesh

well, i had some time and after such long time not touching zbrush i thought lets try out the new version with the so called dynamesh.

if i would still sculpt it would not change my workflow tooo much, i still like to start from a sphere but would use zspheres anyway to make the body and stuff like this.

but anyway, its cool to just be unlimited if you start from the sphere and dont worry about topology anymore at early design stages. here some snakehookfun :)   just a software test as you can see i dont mind the design to much :)

Long time no "see"

Many things happend since i last put something on this tiny private blog and  i just have some time to waste i thought id post something on here instead of facebook :)

Risen2 Cinematic Trailer

The first trailer for our game i actually like myself :) good job from our publisher to make that happen!

This trailer uses mostly ingame assets that were just beefed up a little bit for the trailer, like shading und using the higher polycount versions of our assets.

As more information will come to public and the NDA will vanish i can actually show some sculpts of some r2 related asstes....but that my take a while.

here 2 heads i did .... uhm a year ago, my weakest point that time and still today is the eye area, some of the parts of a face that i still have to train more....ears...i never make ears, its just no phun :)

low level concepting




if you do concepts for heads you can just go grab a sphere and start sculpting to get an idea out very quick as explained in this blog before. but what if you want to do a creatures body to concept the shape , gesture and the appereance.

well here are2 pics of what i do....i use zspheres just to "doodle" around with them.
if you like what youve done you can than go and start sculpting or maby not, ill find this helpfull to get an idea around to other people in early design stages.

heres one :) i concentrate on basic details an anatomy and not getting lost in to many details. most important ist the foundation and thats waht i am concentrating on......

a mate of mine asked me to demonstrate him what i call concept sculpting, so i did this little video.
when i do concept sculpts ill mainly use a rough clay brush and the move tool.
the important thing is to not get lost in any kind of details. the only purpose to sculpt like this is to get an idea out very quick, and if you like it save it or go into detail, refine it and so on.... or basically make a clean mesh from the rough sculpt and use it as a base for further sculpting.

in the case of this video i wouldn't even mind to save what i created, its just....well nothing fancy or worth to keep but well...this vid was to show how i do quick rough basic sculpts, and not to show any kick ass design.

way to go








a mate of mine (Ingmar) who is a 2d concept artist asked me to do a very quick 3d sketch of a design he made.
he isnt into 3d and he asked me to demonstrate him how i was going to create fast 3d sketches.

i made 3 pics and we did a lot of talking but maby you could get an idea how my worklow ist.
